The present invention discloses process for the preparation of (±)-1-2-(dimethylamino)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-ethyl cyclohexanol hydrochloride (Venlafaxine hydrochloride) and its novel crystalline polymorphs designated as Form-I, Form-II, Form-III and crystalline forms of (R) and (S) enantiomers. These are characterized by specific Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and Solid-state NMR (13 C-CP/ MAS NMR) and are useful as agents for treating depression.
