A lightweight composite article is described. The lightweight composite article comprises: ( a) two substantially opposed plates, at least one of the plates is a metal plate: and (b) a support structure of thermoplastic material interposed between the plates, the support structure defining a plurality of hollow spaces. Each of the plates (a) is fixedly attached to the support structure (b) by means of a plurality ;of anchors. Which are distributed substantially uniformly over the surface of each of the plates. The support structure may be in the form of a ribbed support structure and/or an egg-box shaped support structure.
