The present invention pertains to a process for degreasing and/or drying animal skins which comprises contacting the skins to be degreased and/or dried with one or more extractor solvents comprising at least one solvent selected from the group consisting of dimethyl ether (DME), methylal, dioxolane, diethyl ether, and methyl ethyl ketone. Most preferably, the extractor solvent is DME.
