The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for explicit filtering in ambiguous text entry. The invention provides embodiments including various explicit text entry methodologies, such as 2-key and long pressing. The invention also provides means for matching words in a database using build around, stem locking, and word completion methodologies, as well as n-gram searches. An embodiment of the present invention comprises a keyboard (54), display (53), and speaker (102), connected to cpu (100). The cpu is connected to a an operating system (106), disambiguating software (108), vocabulary modules (110), as well as various application programs (112, 114). (FIG.1).
