A compound which is expected as useful as an intermediate in synthesizing drugs and pesticides, a chromatographic separating agent or an optical resolving agent for a racemate. Namely, 3-amino-1-indanole represented by the following formula (I); a method of synthesizing the same; optically active 3-amino-1-indanole; a method of the optical resolution of 3-amino-1-indanole; and a resolution agent for optical isomers containing as the active ingredient the above-described optically active compound. In said formula the OH and NH2 groups are located at either cis- or trans-configuration; and the compound may be in the form of either a racemate or an optically active compound.
