A random polytrimethylene ether ester prepared by polycondensation of: (a) from 80 to 99.9 mole % of a 1,3-propanediol reactant selected from the group consisting of 1,3-propanediol and oligomers and prepolymers of 1,3-propanediol having a degree of polymerization of 2 to 20, and mixtures thereof, (b) from 10 to 0.1 mole % of an aliphatic or aromatic diacid or diester; and (c) optionally up to 10 mole % of a diol reactant other than the 1,3-propane diol reactant, wherein the polycondensation occurs in the presence of a polycondensation catalyst, and wherein mole % is based on the combination of (a), (b) and (c).
