A HIGH FREQUENCY LEAD ACID BATTERY CHARGER
Application 2491/DEL/2004 published 2006-11-10, filed 2004-12-15
The invention relates to high frequency lead acid battery charger with user adjustable voltage and current. As this battery charger is working at high frequency, the size and weight of the transformer unit is considerably reduced as compared to that of the conventional 50 Hz transformer scheme. Also, the conventional charger using 50 Hz transformer has peak charging current, which is almost twice the required average charging current, which is almost twice the required average charging current and hence reduces the battery life. The charger has high frequency operation , delivers a pure DC current to the battery hence enhancing the battery life. The unit is provided with user friendly interface for selection of charging voltage and current. The unit displays input mains AC voltage , frequency, output voltage and the charging current on the LCD panel. The battery charger works on flyback type switched mode power supply (SMPS) operating at 50 KHz. The over voltage and over current protections makes it less vulnerable to voltage fluctuations and high currents. Connecting wrong number of batteries will give the user and indication/warning through display and alarm. In case of a reverse batery connections, the D.C. fuse at the output blows protecting the charger. The battery charger will automatically go into protection and stop charging if the load current exceeds the normal charging current.
