The invention relates to a method of performing fax in the next generation network. It comprises steps: when communication is made between the media gateways at both ends, the media gateway at one end detests the signal of fax beginning, and informs a media gateway controller; the said media gateway controller sends in parallel the command of modifying encode and decode to the communicating media gateways at both ends according to the negotiated fax encode and decode according to the said command of modifying encode and decode, send a return message to the media gateway controller, and begin faxing. The invention can reduce the switching time of fax, and increase the successful rate of fax negotiation. (FIG. - 5)
