In a process for testing the type and quality of a fluid medium in a tank (10), with the help of a capacitive fill level measuring probe (12) immersed in the medium, which is divided into segments (22) in the form of individual condensers, the relative permittivity of the medium is measured in the different segments (22) and the difference between segments (22) is used as yardstick for a locally varying quality of the medium in the tank; or the difference from a reference value is used as yardstick for the variation of the quality of the medium in the tank (10) from the quality of the reference medium corresponding to the reference, value. The system is in a position to determine or avoid product mixtures as a result of dishonest addition of a cheap diluting agent to a pure medium, as well as product mixtures due to unprofessional control or oversight.
