This invention involves the production of a genetically modified bacterium that produces optically pure L-lactic acid with close to 100% efficiency. This genetically modified bacterium is Lactobacillus rhamnosus adh mutant that allows single product L-lactic acid production during the fermentation. The fermented medium containing L-lactic acid is used for L-lactides and higher polymer formation. L-lactic acid polymers have medical applications as bio-absorbable materials.
