A card true/false decision apparatus for deciding whether a card (1) having a predetermined hologram in accordance with the type of the card 1 (I) is true or false according to the hologram. The card true/false decision apparatus comprises a measuring light projection system (semiconductor laser 25a, collimator lens 25b) for projecting measuring light to the hologram, an area sensor (28) for receiving reflected/diffracted light reflected by the hologram of the measuring beam P, a plurality of decision calculation means (30 to 32) for performing calculations corresponding to various holograms in accordance with a signal from the area sensor (28) so as to decide whether the card (1) is true or false, and selection means (selector switch 24, switch circuit 29) for selecting one of the plurality of decision calculation means (30 to 32).
