IMPROVED METHOD OF CONTINUOUS CASTING OF STEEL

Application published 2005-02-25, filed 2001-01-04
There is disclosed an improved method for the continuous casting of steel by mixed grade casting technique wherein a molten steel of one chemistry is first cast into a mould, at the end of which, the casting sequence is discontinued and then another desired molten steel of a different chemistry is cast continuously on to the top of the previously cast steel in the mould thereby to form an intermediate region of mixed chemistry at the tail or trailing end of the first cast and the head or leading end of the second cast, the mixed region being thereafter discarded to obtain desired independent casts characterized in that before the second molten steel is cast into the mould, a grade separator unit is introduced into the mould in contact with the molten top portion viz. the tail or trailing end of the first cast and thereafter the molten steel of a desired chemistry is cast on to the top surface of the grade separator unit and the casting continued.
