A process for the preparation of gas powered buoyant matrix tablets of ciprofloxacin which comprises mixing ciprofloxacin with 5 to 40 % by wt of a gas evolving agent and from 0.5 to 10% by wt of a binder, and the balance comprising of excipients such as a supergelling agent, release retarding polymer, super disintegrant and other pharmaceutically acceptable lubricants, granulating the mixture by wet granulation process and compressing the granules into tablets.
