An improved polyphase motor with on-line torque setting and torque holding mechanism having a stator, a rotor rotatable with respect to said stator, and an output shaft rotatable with said rotor for providing rotary power to a load connected with said shaft, the improvement comprising. Clutch means connecting said rotor and said output shaft, said clutch means fully engaging and permitting said output shaft to be connected directly to said rotor for rotation therewith when the rotary 1 power transmitted by said output shaft to the load is less than preselected amount, said clutch means partially engaging to permit said output shaft to slip relative thereto and rotate more slowly than said rotor and hereby limit the rotary power transmitted to load by said output-shaft to said preselected amount and adjusting means for on-line torque setting or calibrating for compressing said clutch means for varying the preselected amount of rotary power transmitted by the said output shaft to be load at which the said clutch means partially engages.
