The invention relates to an optical recording medium comprising a substrate, a recording layer and a reflecting layer, wherein the recording layer comprises a compound of formula (I), (II), (III), (IV), (V) or a tautomer or a salt thereof. Recording and playback are carried out especially at a wavelength of from 350 to 500 nm, for example using a blue laser. The recording and playback quality is excellent and allows high storage density. Also claimed are optical recording media for recording or playing back at from 380 to 440 nm that comprise a compound having an absorption maximum in the wave range from 300 to 400 nm and a compound of formula (IX).
