A drive for rope driven passenger elevators is disclosed which is of especially flat construction. The length of the transmission output shaft 16 with the drive disk 4 positioned thereon thereby corresponds essentially to the diameter of the motor 1 connected with the housing 7 of the transmission 3 through the housing bell 6 of the clutCh 2. No protruding components can thereby interrupt or influence in any way the operation of a rope driven passenger elevator with the advantageous drive, when this drive is positioned in a space saving manner on the vertical wall 5 of an elevator shaft.
