The device of the present invention for cooling an individual working in an open cast mine or in similar conditions, consists of a container having an air-inlet and air-outlet at the bottom and top, respectively. The container provided with a plurality of air-pervious water-absorbent mats, such as made of khus strands, silica gel, charcoal, placed on horizontally mounted perforated trays at a regular spacing. The container has a base water reservoir connected through a pipe to a rechargeable battery-powered water-pump which pumps water to a water spray above the air-pervious water-absorbent mats. The air-outlet at the top of the container is connected through a water –trap to to the suction side of a rechargeable battery-powered air-pump to enable draw air through the plurality of air pervious water absobent mats. This cool air drawn by the air pump is canalized through an air-distributor to a network of thin flexible pipes to the areas of the user’s body which need to be cooled. The device of the present invention can be used as an effective portable personnel cooling system for cooing an individual working in an open cast mine or in similar conditions
