According to the present invention there is provided a biopreservative coating and a process for its preparation to extend the shelf life of tomatoes wherein the process comprises of making an emulsion of carnauba wax and antioxidant biopreservative like turmeric and casein in an inert atmosphere at 85-950C for 12-16 hours. Commercially available nisin is added and the emulsion is cooled and homogenized by a vortex mixer. The tomatoes are coated by dip coating method and packed in perforated polythene pouches. The biopreservative coating of the present invention extends the shelf life of tomatoes by 18 days at 25-350C and by 45 days at 5-70C, it is non toxic and the tomatoes can be easily coated in field area by an unskilled person.
