The present invention provides a method of preparing an elestomeric compound, comprising masticating in a mixer, silicon-treated carbon block and an elastomer, and optionally a coupling agent, for a time and temperature sufficient to form a masterbatch; wherein the silicon-treated carbon black when compounded with an elastomer imparts to the elastomer poorer abrasion resistance, comparable or higher loss tangent at low temperature and a lower loss tangent at high temperature, compared to an untreated carbon block; milling said masterbatch cooling said masterbatch to faciliitate the addition of a curing additive and avoid substantial premature cross-linking; masticating in a mixer a mixtre comprising the masterbatch and a curing additive, and optionally carbon, silica, carbon block having an organic gorup attached thereto, or combinations thereof, and optionally a coupling agent, for a time and temperature sufficient to form said elastomeric comound
