: “A Process For The Preparation Of Sub-Denier Fibres”

Application 152/DEL/2000 published 2006-07-21, filed 2000-02-25
In the present invention poly ( metaphenylene isophthalamide) polymer is converted into fibres by solution wet spinning technique. A solution of the polymer is prepared in dimethyl acetamide containing 5.0 to 6% of an alkaline earth chloride such as CaCl2 or alkali chloride such as LiCl; the inorganic salt is added to improve the solubility of the polymer in the solvent. The concentration of the polymer in the spinning solution is in the range of 13.0 wt% to 17.0 wt%. These concentrations are lower compared to 20 to 25 wt% used in conventional wet spinning. The lower concentration of the spinning solution is employed to obtain low denier undrawn coagulated filaments which are then drawn to impart the desired mechanical properties to the fibre.
