The present invention relates to a process for the production of polymeric sulfur, including a) distilling a mixture of liquid sulfur and a solvent for cycloocta sulfur with a boiling point of less than 444OC at standard pressure, wherein the bottoms temperature is lower than the boiling temperature of the sulfur and greater than the boiling temperature of the solvent and is at least 120oC;b) quenching of the sulfur melt obtained as the bottoms product of the distillation according to a) with a non-basic liquid or a mixture of non-basic liquids to a temperature below the melting temperature of sulfur.
