NEEDLELESS LUER ACCESS CONNECTOR
Application 1595/KOLNP/2004 published 2006-07-21, filed 2004-10-25
A needleless luer access connector is disclosed having a septum (20) disposed in a housing (10). The septum (20) has a proximal portion (21) with a cross section, a medial portion (22) with a cross section smaller than the cross section of the proximal portion (12), and a distal portion (23). A longitudinal slit (25) extends through the septum (20) from the proximal portion (21) to the distal portion (23). The septum (20) and housing (10) are designed so that septum (20) will not be rotated or removed from the housing (10) when the connector is accessed by a male luer taper. In addition, the septum (20) and housing (10) are designed to bias the slit (25) at the distal portion (23) closed and so a male luer connector does not have to extend completely through the distal portion (23) to open the slit (25) at the distal portion (23). Finally, the septum (20) and housing (10) are designed to minimize the amount of dead space in the connector when accessed with a male luer taper. (FIG. 1)
