The present invention relates to a process for friction welding a tube to a tube-sheet or a plate by using an external tool, comprising proving the tube and the tube sheet or plate on the base of a tube to tube-sheet welding apparatus; selecting a tool adaptable to the machine in registration with the comprised materials und dimension of the joinab1e components; inserting the tool into a tool-holder of the apparatus; rotating the tool and positioning it so that the shoulder of the tool touches the surfaces of the sheet or tube or both; and retaining the tool in said touching position for a predefined period; moving the sheet or plate towards the tube so as to join together.
