The present invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of pure Ribavirin of Formula I, from an intermediate I3-D-ribofuranose derivative of Formula II, wherein R 1 represents protecting groups and R2 represents alkyl groups which in turn is prepared from triazole derivative and ribofuranose compound in the presence of catalytic amount of triflouromethane sulfonic acid in the presence or absence of solvent.
