. A PROCESS FOR PREPARATION OF POLYHYDROXYALKANOATE COPOLYMER

Application 512/DEL/2004 published 2006-05-26, filed 2004-03-19
The main usage of the ivention is for the preparation of bacterial polyhdroxyalkanoate copolymer in a natural medium that contains sucrose and organic acid. Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA)is produced by a number of bacteria under nutrient depletion condition as intracellular storage material of carbon and energy. Their potential use as biodegradable and biocompatible thermoplastics has attracted wordwide attention. Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHB), which occurs most commonly, does not posses material properties for practical application because it is crystalline and brittle. The copolymer of PHB with polyhydroxyvalerate(PHB-co-PHV) is more elastic and tougher compared to PHB. Sugars such as sucrose and glucose are the most common carbon sources used for PHB production and propionate or pentanoate is usually added to the medium for copolymer production. Varying the composition of the carbon substrate and utilization of required bacterial strain controls the copolymer production and substrate cost represent nearly 40% of total cost. Thus it is essential to study low cost substrate for bacterial growth and copolymer production.
