A brightener pigment comprising (a) a water-insoluble urea-formaldehyde resin and (b) a water-soluble fluorescent whitening agent. The brightener pigments are used for the purpose of improving the appearance of detergents, of compounds thereof, and of individual raw materials. The fluorescent whitening agent does not contact the goods being washed. Depending on the final use, the brightener pigment is subjected to a surface treatment.
