An improved process for chlorination is described wherein a solution of chlorinating agent and solution of sucrose-6-ester are mixed together by coaddition to a reaction vessel, the addition of both the reactants starting and completeing approximately at the same time. The product of chlorinated sucrose is further extracted in organic solvents and deacylated to produce the high intensity sweetener product 4,1’,6’ trichlorogalactosucrose.
