AN IMPORVED METHOD FOR THE PREPARATION OF 16 – DEHYDROPREGENOLONE ACETATE [16- DPA] FROM PSEUDODIOSGENIN DIACETATE [PDA]

An improved process for the production of 16-DPA of formula (3) as shown in the drawing accompanying this specification and the said process comprising stirring of compound of formula (10pseudodiosgenin acetate) in two phase system of water and dichloromethane in presence of oxidising reagent comprising RuCI3.3H2O in combination with sodium salt of perhalogen acid or NaBrO3 and TEBA at a temperature ranging between 20 – 40 0C, for a period in the range of 0.50 – 3.1 hours, separating organic layer, passing it through celite and removing the solvent under reduce pressure to get diosone of formula (2) which on hydrolysis by organic acid produces 16- DPA (3).
