SOFTWARE TECHNIQUE FOR CONVERSION OF N-BIT SINGLE TURN ABSOLUTE SHAFT ANGLE ENCODER TO PROGRAMMABLE M*N-BIT MULTI-TURN ENCODER
Application 265/MUM/2002 published 2006-01-20, filed 2002-03-19
Absolute shaft angle encoders are commercially available in single and multi-turn packages. The absolute encoders are available in n-bit single and m*n-bit multi-turn packages. A typical 12*12 bit multi-turn encoder with parallel output provides a 12-bit (n) code for the instantaneous angular position of the rotating shaft and an additional 12-bit (m) code for the number of unidirectional rotations. Generally, they are far more expensive than a n-bit single-turn packages and require 24 port lines (m+n) for data access. A software technique has been developed which allows the user to substitute a multi-turn encoder by a single-turn encoder with an application specific, software program for measurement of both positive and negative angular displacements. This increases the effective range and the resolution of the single-turn encoder and thus enhances its features to match the performance of the multi-turn encoders at a significantly lower cost.
