The present invention relates to a process of continuously producing chlorine dioxide by the reduction of chlorate ions with hydrogen peroxide as a reducing agent in a tubular reactor, characterised by comprising the steps of: (a) feeding hydrogen peroxide and a metal chlorate or chloric acid or a mixture thereof at one end of the tubular reactor to form a reaction mixture; (b) reducing chlorate ions in the reaction mixture in said tubular reactor to form chlorine dioxide; and (c) recovering a product containing chlorine dioxide at the other end of said .tubular reactor.
