A process for reducing the phosphorus content in animal or vegetable oils containing undesired phosphatides which comprises subjecting the oil to enzymatic degradation using an acyl-cleaving phospholipase, wherein the enzyme is derived from Aspergillus and exhibits phospholipase A2 activity and/or phospholipase A1 activity, in addition to lysophospholipase activity, and the pH value in the enzyme solution is adjusted to less than 4, and the reaction is carried out at temperatures of 20 degree to 80 degree centigrade.
