A process for the carbonylation of a C1 to C4 alkyl acohol and/or a rective derivative thereof which process comprises contacting a C1 to C4 alkyl alcohol and/or a rective derivative thereof with carbon monoxide at a temperature in the range 130 to 250deg. C and a pressure in the range 1 to 100 barg in a liquid reaction composition in a carbonylation reactor characterized in that the liquid reaction composition comprises:(a) a rhodium catalyst, (b) an alkyl halide, and (c) as promoter, at least one of ruthenium and osmium.
