The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of carboxylic acid from aliphatic alcohol. More particularly, the present invention relates to a process for the conversion of aliphatic alcohols to carboxylic acids using a nickel containing catalyst. The invention resides in the finding that the activity of a nickel catalyst is significantly enhanced when the catalyst is used in combination with a heterocyclic organic compound as a lig and or promoter. The heterocyclic organic compound contains at least two heteroatoms of which at least one is selected from S-or N-. An iodide promoter is also used.
