In a centrifugal separator a centrifugal rotor (1) is connected to a vertical spindle (3), which is supported by a frame (4) and journalled in a first bearing (6) and a second bearing (5). The centrifugal separator is drivable by means of an electric motor (12), the stator (14) of the motor being fixed to the frame (4) such that it is radially immovable relative to it, whereas the rotor (15) of the motor is radially movable together with the spindle (3). The gap (16) between the rotor (15) and the stator (14) of the motor is dimensioned so that it permits the radial movability of the rotor (15). (FIG. -1)
