The invention relates to a process for preparing an alkyl cyanoacetate. Alkyl chloroacetate is reacted with a metal cyanide in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst. A biphasic solvent system consisting of water and a water immiscible organic solvent is used as the reaction medium. Alkyl cyanoacetate produced is recovered from the organic phase. This process is cost effective and produces alkyl cyanoacetate in high purity and very good yield.
