The present invention provides a process for preparing a catalyst for the production of 2-methylpyrazine from ethylenediamine and 1,2-propyleneglycol. The catalyst effectively gives very high conversion and selectivity by decreasing the by-product formation. The catalyst comprises of copper, chromium and zinc in their oxide form as main components and is prepared by a three-step process incorporating a carrier and a promoter.
