A method for producing a monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon containing benzene, toluene and xylene as main components by contacting a raw material containing one or more hydrocarbons having about 2 to about 25 carbon atoms with a hydrocarbon conversion catalyst comprising a zeolite containing substantially no protons and having an intermediate pore diameter of about 5 to 6.5 angstroms. a molar ratio of SiO2 or Al2O3 of 20 or more and one or more metals belonging to Group lb of the Periodic Table and at least one metal selected from zinc, gallium, indium, nickel, palladium and platinum and compounds thereof in gas phase at a temperature of 6500 C or less.
