SPACEBLOCK SCOOPS FOR ENHANCED ROTOR CAVITY HEAT TRANSFER
Application IN/PCT/2002/00957 published 2006-03-24, filed 2002-07-23
A gas cooled dynamoelectric machine is provided that is comprises of a rotor, a rotor winding comprising axially extending coils and concentric end windings, and a plurality of space blocks located between adjacent end windings thereby to define a plurality of cavities, each bounded by adjacent space blocks and adjacent end windings. To enhance the heat transfer rate from the copper end turns of the field end winding region, at least one scoop structure is provided adjacent the radially inner end of a cavity facing surface of at least one space block for intercepting and redirecting coolant flow into the respective cavity. The space block it self may have curved upstream and/or downstream surfaces for facilitating circulating coolant flow. (FIG. - 1)
