The present invention is directed toward the surface treatment of IOL including a method of modifying the surface to increase its hydrophobicity. The surface treatment comprises the coating the device by fluoro carbon layer. The carbon layer is the plasma treated to form reactive functional containing oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur. In preferred a IOL surface is pretreated with an oxidizing plasma prior to deposition of the carbon layer in order to improve adhesion of the carbon layer. The present invention is also directed to medical device comprising a surface made by such a method.
