A process for the preparation of 2-phenylacetophenone derivatives represented by the general formula (I): (I) (wherein X is alkyl or haloalkyl; and Y is hydrogen, halogeno, or optionally substituted alkyl), which comprises reacting a compound represented by the general formula (II) with an acid: (II) (wherein X and Y are each as defined above; and R is hydrogen or alkyl).
