In one aspect, a mapping between a file type and a program is received, a client system file is graphically presented, a selection of the graphical depiction is received, a program associated with the selected file is identified, and a request to execute the identified program is sent. In another aspect, a server system file is graphically presented, a selection of the graphical depiction is received, the selection is transmitted to a server system, a request to execute an associated program is received, and the associated program is executed. In still another aspect, a web server file is graphically presented and a request to execute a first program that includes information concerning a second program associated with the file is received.
