In one aspect, a mapping between a file type and a program is received, a client system file is graphically presented, a selection of the graphical depiction is received, a program associated with the selected file is identified, and a request to execute the identified program is sent. In another aspect, a server system file is graphically presented, a selection of the graphical depiction is received, the selection is transmitted to a server system, a request to execute an associated program is received, and the associated program is executed. In still another aspect, a web server file is graphically presented and a request to execute a first program that includes information concerning a second program associated with the file is received. Application output data from the second program is reviewed and formatted by the first program and received application output data is presented to the user. (FIG. NIL)
